Imabari celebrates building 3,000 ships

The Japanese shipbuilder passed the 3,000 new vessels mark last week with the delivery of a Capesize bulker to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line).

On 18 February a naming and delivery ceremony was held at Imabari’s Saijo Shipyard for the 181,000 dwt bulker Cape Suzuran.

The newbuilding is classed by ClassNK and flagged with the Liberian Registry. The vessel is built with nine holds and hatches and is the largest size that can enter the port of Dunkirk.

Imabari built its first steel ship the Fuji Maru in 1956, and delivered its 1,000th ship the Chubu Maru in 1997. In 2012 the shipbuilder delivered its 2,000th new vessel the Cape Lily.

The Japanese shipbuilder said it would continue to strive to “build better ships”.
